AEP Class Schedule: March 26-June 7

Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled or two sessions may be combined into one. If classes are cancelled, you will be notified. Families enrolled in discounted tuition are eligible to register for one enrichment class per block, per student, at the same discounted rate. Class fees will be added to your bill.

There are no classes when school is closed or on school half days.

AEP Enrichment Classes

Intro Spanish (K): Monday 2:30-3:15 pm

Our introductory Spanish class is designed for students with little to no background in Spanish.  Our class is taught through games and play and are designed to introduce students to a foreign language in a fun, no-pressure situation.  This class is also taught by one of our bilingual AEP staff who has a great understanding of the needs of our Kindergarten students.  This class has a minimum of 6 students and a cap of 8.

AcroSports will be returning to San Francisco Day School to offer their introductory gymnastics class for our younger students.  Students learn basic jumps, rolls, and tumbling on our mats while incorporating strength and flexibility throughout the practice. Students will develop their spatial awareness, coordination, and balance. The class includes warm-ups and stretching, tumbling instruction, and group games.  This class has a minimum of 8 students and will be capped at 10 due to our space.

 
Comic Creators (1-8): Monday 3:15-4:15 pm

Self-publish your own comic! Do you like to draw?  Do you like to make up stories?  In this fun, fast-paced workshop, we'll be writing, drawing, and self-publishing our own comics!  Whether you're inspired by superheroes, comics, or moments from your own life, this workshop will give you the tools to tell any story. We will learn to use traditional media such as crow quill pens and India ink, along with new technology, like iPads and Photoshop, to create compelling stories with expressive art. The class will end with a "mini-comic convention" where we invite friends, family, and classmates to take home copies of the work we've made. No special drawing ability is necessary, but enthusiasm and imagination are a must. Sam is a comic book artist with a national reputation who has published many books of his own.

Chess Wizards will be returning to San Francisco Day School to offer their great programming and instruction to our lower school students.  Chess Wizards offers fun, intellectual, and challenging chess education and tournament experiences to children of all abilities and ages.  Their curriculum is designed to impart the many benefits of learning chess - such as critical thinking, sportsmanship, and learning from our mistakes in a challenging and exciting way.

Math Circle (3-4): Monday 4:00-5:00 pm

Math Circle is an alternative math enrichment program designed to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics by introducing young children to elements of mathematical culture. This particular Math Circle will be geared towards 3rd and 4th grade students. Similar to our other classes, we do have a minimum and maximum number for regular participation.

Intro to dance is a combination of basic, classical ballet technique, and jazz technique. The class will include stretching, strengthening, and creative movement elements. New ballet and jazz moves will be introduced each week and the class will learn short choreography in both ballet and jazz styles. This class will get the k'ers moving to music while working on strength and coordination.

Zumba® Kids is a fun, high-energy fitness class packed with specially choreographed routines and games for children using the latest music and rhythms like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia, and salsa. Zumba® Kids classes inspire kids to express themselves through movement and play while effectively improving overall health and well-being.  Educators love Zumba Kids® because of the effects it has on children: increasing focus, building self-confidence, enhancing creativity and coordination, boosting metabolism, and implementing teamwork skills. Each class is headed by a trained and licensed Zumba® Kids fitness instructor. Classes not only include music and dance, but arts, crafts, and cultural education as well. It is a fun way for kids to keep healthy and motivated!

Jane Kim is an American painter, science illustrator, and the founder of the Ink Dwell studio. Last year she was an artist in residence at SF Day and inspired all of us at her artist assembly. She is best known for her large-scale murals, created with the purpose of promoting advocacy of the natural world and endangered species. We are honored to have her return to SF Day to create a mural with students in our after-school art classes. This class is open to students 1st - 8th grades. Cooking Around the World will be returning to San Francisco Day School to offer their wonderful curriculum designed to educate students about healthy eating and the basics of cooking.  Each lesson will consist of the completion of two recipes from the country of the day and teaching students more about that specific nation. Upon completion, they will get to enjoy their food.  They do a great job of taking into account students' allergies and other dietary restrictions.

This class is designed to help our youngest artists celebrate their amazing imaginations while being exposed to many expressive art materials. Get to know the materials and mediums we enjoy at SF Day; clay, metal, wood, fabric, paint, and collage to name a few! Ms. Richards has been teaching kindergarteners at SF Day for the last 35 years and is very inspired by them!

Are you looking for an engaging class full of exciting new challenges? NCTC’s experienced teaching artists will use group theatre games to get students involved in exploring dramatic play and acting. Our theme this session is Magic!  We’ll fine-tune our wizardry by casting spells and drinking magic potions that allow us to transform into enchanted creatures of all shapes and sizes. We’ll also create mystical tales of adventure wherein students will be transported to a magical world where anything is possible. Our activities encourage storytelling, cooperation, spontaneity and physical activity in a fast-paced format.

Ms. Philpott will be teaching another session of our Build It class.  Students will develop an understanding of the scientific process through building and creating, while also learning how math influences our creations.  This is a great class for students who want to learn more about math while also building and creating.

 
EV3 Lego Robotics (4-5): Wednesday 3:30-4:30 pm

This class is designed to introduce building and programming with the sophisticated Lego EV3's.  For 4th graders, it is a great opportunity to be introduced robotics and programming using this powerful and flexible platform. We will work on fun challenges like building and programming robots that can rescue a turtle, draw graffiti, or collect a basket of candy. This class is not a competitive Lego robotics team but is a great place for students who are interested in the team to practice their skills.

So you want to be great at drawing? Drawing “hang out” with our beloved Mr. Gordon is for you! This after-school arts class is designed to help you discover the secrets and shortcuts to better drawing habits. Mr. Gordon makes drawing fun with games and a chance to explore many different drawing tools. Mr. Gordon is known for his exquisite printmaking and drawing skills. His work is shown and sold in galleries throughout the world. His love of monsters, superheroes, and mythical creatures is contagious. This class helps students illustrate their creative thinking and ability to draw what they see.

K Makery (K): Thursday 2:30-3:30 pm

This class is designed to help our youngest scientists develop problem-solving skills while getting to utilize the Design Space on a regular basis. Get to know the Design Space and scientific process through building and tinkering.  This class will be taught by Ms. Vera and does have a cap of 11 students.

Do you love playing video games? Ever wanted to build your own? We’ll teach you to use block-based language to build an exciting top-down game where you can uncover hidden items, solve challenging puzzles, and battle your way through waves of enemy characters. Along the way, you’ll learn fundamental computer science concepts including loops, conditionals, boolean logic, message passing, and variables, using an intuitive and beginner-friendly interface.

This course is taught by a team of experienced coders from a variety of backgrounds and designed for newcomers with little to no previous coding experience. Let the games begin!

Hammer, hammer, saw, saw, bang bang! Learn the basics of woodworking so you can design and build fantastic forms for function and fun.  Mr. Bill comes to us from Town School's woodworking department each week to help you make objects that move and groove. Bill has helped students build just about anything imaginable over his many years as a woodworking teacher at Town School. Students will construct with tools, wood, and found objects while developing woodworking skills and expanding their imaginations. Bill stresses safety and design as the foundation of creative woodworking. This class is ideal for woodworkers of all genders!

This class is designed for entry level tennis players in Kindergarten who are looking for some fun structured play that allows students to learn the basics of the game.
